The story of Malàkio: when the sea inspires design

It all began in 2020, in the midst of lockdown. Morgan, an industrial designer with a passion for materials and recycling, returned to his native Brittany. There, he wondered: what happens to the millions of oyster, mussel, and scallop shells thrown away each year? The answer, often, is incineration or landfill.

With Hugo, his childhood friend, they decided to do something different. To give new life to these marine debris. The duo then created Malàkio , a circular design workshop that transforms shells into beautiful, useful, and sustainable objects.

Unique know-how: Istrenn shell composite

At the heart of the Malàkio project is an innovative and poetic material: a mineral composite made up of 60% recycled shells, crushed and then bonded to a bio-sourced resin or a mineral matrix. It is naturally colored by the shells themselves (black for the mussel, white for the scallop, beige for the oyster, etc.).

All without firing, with a minimal carbon footprint. A 100% artisanal, local, and eco-responsible material. Each piece is cast, sanded, and polished by hand in their workshop.
